PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
“Be Part of Something Bigger” was the theme for the 2018 ACHE Congress. For those that went to their first ACHE Congress, the theme was apt. For those that have experienced the congress over the years, it reinforced the power of ACHE and the value membership and belonging.
HCE continues to be a part of something bigger. HCE was well represented at ACHE Congress 2018. The College presented Richard Cordova, FACHE, past immediate president of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, with its highest honor — ACHE’s Gold Medal Award. Rich’s path and influence have been felt locally and nationally and he continues to inspire all of us to be better leaders and to give back. Also, HCE was chosen to nationalize BridgeRoads as a broader benefit for ACHE members. Our current HCE Treasurer, Mike Lee, FACHE, represented our chapter in transforming this mentoring program into a national ACHE program.
Our joint Congress reception with California Association of Healthcare Leaders (CAHL) and San Diego Healthcare Leaders (SOHL) was a success and I look forward to the continued collaboration and partnership with them. This joint reception was made possible with a generous support of Aramark. Thank you to Ruth Ayenew, Director of Business Development of Healthcare Technologies at Aramark (pictured here between me and CAHL president Toby Marsh) for joining the fun with us. Lastly, I’d like to take a moment to congratulate our own immediate past president Harry Sax, MD, FACHE. His leadership in 2017 resulted in our local chapter receiving a Chapter Merit Award at Congress. Congratulations to Harry and the 2017 Board of Directors for a job well done!
One of HCE’s mission tenets is to support and prepare the next generation of healthcare leaders. We recently completed one of our signature events – the Western Region College Bowl. Congratulations to the winning team from UCLA, a firm second to USC, and with Cal State Los Angeles in third for the graduate competition! CSU Chico defended their first place title in the undergrad competition with UNLV coming in with a very close second. This is an important event as it reminds us why organizations like ACHE and HCE exist.
ACHE and HCE, however, cannot accomplish our mission without the support of members, volunteers, and sponsors. I encourage you to reach out and get involved in any way you’d like. There are many opportunities, such as hosting our Early Careerist Committee or leading an education program. Many affinity groups also exist such as the LGBQT and Asian Healthcare Leaders forums. If you have not joined to support one of these groups, I highly encourage you to do so. You or your organization could also participate in next year’s ACHE Congress as a topic or poster presenter. To be considered, please submit proposals before the deadline of May, 9 2018.
We are part of something bigger everyday as we make the lives of people we care for better. By working together, we empower our teammates to do the right thing. And by supporting each other in our professional development, we also ensure that our healthcare leaders will thrive in a future that is bigger than themselves.
