Long Beach, CA – On February 1, 2018, Health Care Executives of Southern California, the CSU Long Beach Health Care Administration Alumni Network (HCAAN) and TRAFFIK Health, co-sponsored CSULB’s Thought Leadership Series program featuring Mario Molina, M.D. and Sheldon Zinberg, M.D.
This event was hosted by St. Mary’s Hospital Dignity Health with approximately 50 healthcare executives and senior managers in attendance. The program featured the stories of two physicians who started managed care organizations that were deeply rooted in their local communities that evolved into publicly-run companies. In addition to telling their stories, both panelists candidly spoke about failures and successes, and shared best practices. We also engaged our panelists in a thought provoking discussion that included the Amazon/Chase/Hathaway merger, our national health care dilemma, and the single payer system.
Here are some key take-away from the discussions:
- A single payer system, yes or no? Both panelists support a single payer model, but think that different approaches should be taken.
- Shared Best Practices: 1) Engage and talk to your people more; 2) LISTEN better; 3) Make a lifestyle change, always find time to exercise, eat healthy; 4) Focus on the WHOLE PATIENT; and 5) Create VALUE for the community you serve.
- When asked if they had regrets or something each one would do differently, both reflected that they should not have sold.
- Since healthcare is approximately 18% of the GDP, driving up cost and competition, health plans must overcome a similar challenge. They should all think about how they are creating value to their members.
- Consistently focus on quality care combined with good business management; invest healthcare delivery and effective disease management programs
CSULB HCAAN hopes that this type of programs, such as this Thought Leadership Series featuring prominent healthcare figures such as Drs. Molina and Zinberg, would inspire today’s healthcare leaders to commit to making a positive impact in the future of healthcare delivery both locally and nationally.
